Back in 2007, after the conclusion of Shaman King and working as a supervisor for the cancelled manga Smash Bomber, Hiroyuki Takei started is new manga series called Jūki Ningen Jumbor. However this too was another failure. This manga was a long time in development and did not take the traditional route of having a oneshot first to judge the success of the manga. During this time Takei and his staff worked on developing the “World Xand,” various EMs (Earth Movers), and character designs over multiple time-skips. As a result, Takeihad material and ideas to work with for Jumbor to last many years as a manga series. However, it was cancelled from Weekly Shonen Jump after only 10 short weeks.  In the single compiled volume release, Takei added a portion of the materials he produced in a section called “Jumbor Japan.”

However, on October 7th, 2007 for Comiket 73, Takei produced a new addition to the  Jūki Ningen Jumbor series, titled Jumbor Japon. This book was a self-published and was originally sold only at this event, where it was completely sold out. The volume contained 48 full color pages plus 14 black and white pages. The book was edited by “Genber Publising,” an inside joke to the leader of the Dr. Docult’s Jumbors. The book was printed by Akatuki Insatsu. The exact number of volumes printed is unknown, but it is extremely rare.  This book as a whole is a close to Takei’s only artbookever released and is not officially recognized or owned by Shueisha (who owns Weekly Shonen Jump).

In October 2010, the book went into a limited reprint which orders were taken via Twitter. The price for this reprint was 1600yen (plus 80yen for shipping) and was only available to residents in Japan. In addition to this reprint, the book came in an envelope with “Genber Publishing x Takei” on it and a hand written receipt. This reprint was referred to as 「JUMBOR JAPON希望」, though the cover and a majority of the content remained the same from the original 2007 release. A complete page-by-page listing of the contents of the 2007 release can be found at the end of the article. At this time there is no page-by-page comparison between the two versions.

Some of the original color images were also reprinted in the dual volume reprint of the original Jūki Ningen Jumbor series known as ” Jumbor Ang Zeng Bang” (安全版, “Anzen ban”) which also translate to “Security Edition.” (This occured shortly after the release of the “Shaman King Kang Zeng Bang,” 完全版, “kanzenban”, or “Perfect Edition”) There was a pull out page in both volumes (“Up” and “Down”) which contained small versions of many of the color images in Jumbor Japon. However Jumbor Japon in addition contains all of the color pages used in the Weekly Shonen Jump release without any text on them. There is some other earlier concept art that received color as well in this release. Interestingly, two of the images have Baru dressed in a more pirate-style clothing withone of his hands being replaced with a crane hook (image to the left).

Looking at some of the earlier sketches (and “name”, a rough sketch of a chapter) provides some insight on how earlier versions of the story progressed. Many of the characters, including Baru and Rivetta appear much younger than they do in the actual release. The numbering system on the Jumbor “horns” was not in earlier sketches either. Additionally the meeting with Nipper was moved into the first chapter on an early version of the story.

Overall the book is a rare and unique look at Takei’s internal thought process on creating a new manga series and is high recommended for serious fans of the original Jūki Ningen Jumbor manga series. The book also has very little Japanese and all name are in English, this book can easily be enjoyed by both Japanese and English speakers alike.

The Jumbor manga series is currently running in Ultra Jump in Japan and is up to it’s 10th chapter released. The art used for this cover was originally used for a previous Ultra Jump issue cover but has been recolored since that release.

Shaman King Remix Editions have been released

Currently the first two volumes are released. Each volume contains a small side story, similar to the style and timeframe as “Snake’s Legs” from Mentalite. In volume 1, the extra is four pages long. In volume 2, the extra is three pages long. New Shaman King Remix volumes will be sold every two weeks, and contain the same reworked art from the Shaman King Kang Zeng Bang editions.

Jumbor was on the cover of Ultra Jump

Ultimo recieves a color page in JumpSQ

Even though Ultimo continues to be near the bottom of the ranking of chapters in Jump SQ, it now recieves yet another color page this month.

Ultimo will be absent from the June issue of Jump SQ

Takei will be taking a one month break from Ultimo in the June issue. No reason is stated. However, when Jumbor took a shorter number of pages for an issue, shortly afterwards the Shaman King Remix was announced. It’s most likely that Takei is working on another project…. which could be the following….

Ultimo will recieve a VOMIC in June 2011

A Vomic is the combination between “Video and Comic” but is more closely connected to a Drama CD with pictures. The Vomic will take a collection of chapters (often 3), and present them with a full voice-over for the entire chapter or a selection. They are free to view online with no region restrictions (however it’s completely in Japanese). The voice actors have been announced for the following:

Agari Yamato = Konishi Katsuyuki (was Amidamaru in Shaman King)
Ultimo = Nakajima Megumi (was Ranka Lee in Macross Frontier)
Kodaira Rune = Nabatame Hitomi

The casting of Nakajima Megumi is a very interesting sign for this vomic. It’s highly likely this is a testing ground for an Ultimo anime and will be using this to judge reception towards it. Shaman King also had a successful line of music CDs (Specifically the S.F.O.V. line), and with Nakajima Megumi as a lead character, it looks like a music CD may be in the future for Ultimo before the end of the year.

This is exciting news since there has been no word on continuing the original Shaman King series after the Kang Zeng Bang. No word on how Shaman King will be continued (as a serialization, doujinshi, oneshot, .etc), or any time frame for this.  The same is for the new project that is still in the planning stages. Takei stated that because of new staff that he has hired recently.

Additionally Takei announced that he has drawn at least one card for the new upcoming Card Fight Vanguard card game and anime. In an upcoming event Takei will be there to sign the card he drew the art for. More information can be found on the Japanese website: http://cf-vanguard.com/event/

Jumbor is a remake of the 2007 series Juki Ningen Jumbor (also known as Jumbor Barutronica) published in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The series was canceled after ten issues and released in one volume. In July of 2010, Hiroyuki Takei and his former assistant now writer debuted the reworked version of Jumbor inside Ultra Jump. Also in July, Jump Comics released the Angzengbang (Security Edition) of Jumbor (the original series under the new short name) including the ten chapters with the two one-shots published in Ultra Jump. The remake is currently being published in Ultra Jump in Japan. Chapter 5 was recently released in the December issue of Ultra Jump (released on the 19th of November).

Edit: Jumbor volume 1 was released today in Japan. As such, s-manga has uploaded a preview of the volume. This preview is the entire first chapter of the series in Japanese. You can read the preview here.  This is the text summery of the book provided by Shueisha:

All of a sudden, a mysterious man appeared at the meeting place of the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons Summit in Washington. This man, Genber Diode, announced the start of the World’s Construction Project in order to turn everything into a plain and build a whole new world. Simultaneously, his 10 Heavy Mecha-Human Jumbors debuted the project by dismantling the world heritage. 10 years later, the legendary construction warrior Baru Crow who had lost his life during the world demolition, had been reborn as Heavy Mecha-Human Jumbor and stolen by the hand of Rivetta, the princess of the Dovork Kingdom. Baru is now expected to be the world messiah…!?

On July 17th in Japan, the latest issue of Ultra Jump was released in Japan. With this month’s release begins the start of Hiroyuki Takei’s new series, “Jumbor” ( ユンボル -JUMBOR- ). This series is an continueation of his original series “Jyuki Ningen Jumbor” ( 重機人間ユンボル ) which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2007. This new adventure is more targeted to an older audience, and will follow Baru’s journey. The first chapter title is called “Scrap and Build.” The first chapter is 63 pages long and contains 3 color pages. The Ultra Jump August issue cover can be found to the left, and the first 3 pages of the manga can be found below.

Included with this issue of Ultra Jump is also 2 volume cover jackets for the upcoming reprint release of the original Jumbor series. The two volume set will include all 10 original chapters, the two oneshots for “Jumbor” from UJ and some new extras. The new covers are drawn by  Tenjin Hidetaka in the style of model kits found in Japan. The two reprint volumes (know as Angzengbang, or ユンボル 安全版 ) will be released on August 4th with Ultimo volume 4. Hiroyuki Takei continues to use extra letter “g” in his spelling for the reprint volume, which should be spelt “Anzenban”. This trend started with the Shaman King reprint volumes of “Kang Zeng Bang.”

Additionally, some retailers in Japan, with the release of this new Ultra Jump issue have another promotional campaign. This campaign is giving out free double-sided posters with the purchase of an Ultra Jump issue. A sample of these image can be found below. Along with these promotions the retail covers for the Jumbor reprint volumes were also released, both which feature Baru on them. These covers can be placed next to each other for an overlapping image. They are positioned so either order would show a complete image. These covers are also posted below.
